Well-aged Longmorn distilled back in 1990 and matured for 27 years in a refill ex-bourbon hogshead. Spicy & Sweet profile.
Nose: Highly fruity – pineapples, mangos and bananas sitting alongside creamy yoghurt – rather like a tropical smoothie. Resting offers real benefit here, revealing leather, milk chocolate, red grapes and singed lemon peels. Whilst exceptionally fruity, underneath there is some natural earthiness – moist soils, mosses and damp walls. The addition of water retains the tropical fruitiness, but adds both sweetness and some slightly musty ginger spicing.
Taste: Sweet and dessert like – spiced chocolate cake with toffee sauce. A touch more orchard-led now with apples and pears, but still tropical with banana, this quickly becomes quite spicy – cinnamon, ginger and pepper. Resting reveals stone fruits – peaches and apricots as well as some bakery flavours of puff pastries, cinnamon swirls and brown sugars. Water softens the fruits making them quite syrupy and adds in an interesting touch of minerality - cliffside rocks and wet slates.
Finish: Long in length, with spiced fruits and rich toffee sauce.
A very fruity and well pronounced Longmorn with great tropical flavours, depth and balance. Certainly spicy and sweet as the profile suggests, this would make for an ideal after-dinner treat. Recommended.
