Day 8, and a quarter of the way through the highly enjoyable Boutique-y Whisky Company Advent calendar. When you get up to your fifteen batch of a single malt whisky you should probably rest easy that what you’re producing is ticking a few boxes for at least a few people. It’s therefore no surprise to see another Boutique-y Invergordon within the 2017 advent calendar. In fact, thinking back, this label is possibly one of the very first that I can remember seeing back in 2012. 15 iterations later…
Nose: Pronounced, and heavy with aged wood and cereals. Polish, varnish, glue, honey nut loops and cornflakes are coated with chocolate nibs and deep biscuit notes. Toffee apples, leather, cardboard and some fresh grassiness follow. Water adds some sweetness in the form of honeycomb.
Taste: Staying on theme, this delivers some big wood –some old and furniture-like some fresher, greener and sappy. Still a lot of polish and glue – full on 42 year old airfix – but now supported by an array of quite juicy fruits – peaches, melons and pineapple. A slash of water really enhances the sensation of syrupiness and sugars….tasty.
Finish: Short to medium - fruity and offering both glue and a touch of cinnamon.
It’ll come as no surprise that that Batch 15 of the Boutique-y Invergordon is solid well-aged grain. It benefits from a drop of water to my taste, but is still, vibrant, fruity and lively and has been drawn from a well-judged bourbon cask. Yummers.
