Speyside distillery BenRiach has had periods of boom and periods of closure. Then owners Pernod Ricard closed the site in 2001, but, two years later a modern revival of the distillery began in earnest, with Billy Walker (former Production Director for Burn Stewart) leading the reopening of BenRiach. Fast-forward a few years, and the BenRiach Distillery Company (which is now part of Brown-Forman) owns both Glendronach and Glenglassaugh as well as their namesake distillery.
“Drink sherry - help the whisky industry” It sounds both romantic and rather supportive – who doesn’t enjoy this story of a centuries old symbiotic relationship. Alas, nowadays it’s far from the whole truth of the matter. Whilst sherry has an image problem (despite wine educators and bartenders singing its praises, sales continue to decline) and could certainly do with you all drinking a little bit more of it, the drinking sherry industry and the whisky sherry industry have been near separate entities for many years.
Benriach distilled towards the tail end of Billy Walker’s time at the helm of the distillery – initially matured in ex-bourbon and then given a short additional stopover inside a sherry octave. Botted at 56.8% ABV with 230 bottles available (shortly I believe) this will set you back £50 for a 50cl bottle.

Door Number 19 of the 2018 Boutique-y Advent calendar delivers Benriach 9 year old Batch 4 and a label that highlights the 2012 revitalisation of the distillery’s old malting equipment. Times are a changin’ for Benriach following the sale of the distillery in 2016 (alongside Glendronach and Glenglassaugh) from Billy Walkers’ consortium to industry powerhouse Brown-Forman for a cool £281 million.
